How Muscle Weakness Causes Tennis Elbow

Muscle tension AND weakness often go hand-in-hand when it comes to causing Tennis Elbow

Although sometimes Tennis Elbow is caused more by tension – and sometimes it’s caused more by weakness.

If you find your forearm muscles to be extremely tight and it’s very hard to stretch them, then chronic [stubborn, long-lasting] muscle tension may be more of a cause for you.

In that case, be sure to read my post: How Stubborn Muscle Tension Causes Tennis Elbow

If you find that you have fairly good flexibility (you can bend your wrist and stretch your forearm muscles without a lot of difficulty)…

BUT, small, everyday tasks, like simply turning a doorknob or taking a jug of milk out of the fridge, often cause pain in your elbow – then muscle weakness is likely more of a cause of your Tennis Elbow.

The Good News About Tennis Elbow Pain Caused By Muscle Weakness

The good news though, is that muscle weakness (or a combination of weakness and tension) can cause tendon pain long before there’s any injury to the tendon.

Just because you have tendon pain – (even long-standing tendon pain) – lasting weeks or months – doesn’t automatically mean you have an injury.

The pain can simply be a warning that you’re headed toward an injury. And the “warning phase” can be an on-and-off thing or it can last for weeks or even months

Should You Do Exercises Right Away To Strengthen Your Weak Forearm “Tennis Elbow muscles?”

It probably seems like the obvious answer would be to try and strengthen those weak muscles in your forearm – Right?

The short answer is: Yes, exercises need to be part of a complete solution to Tennis Elbow…

And there’s no shortage of people demonstrating and selling exercises for Tennis Elbow online…

But, it’s not so easy, if you’re well into the vicious Tennis Elbow cycle – Once you’re stuck in the triple trap…

  1. Because it’s not the first thing you do if you’re injured – You need to get the tendon ready and do other things first

  2. Resistance exercise is most appropriate and helps the most in the last stage of healing – It doesn’t help much if you’re stuck in the early stages…

  3. For most people with actual Tendon injuries it’s extremely hard to break the cycle or make much progress with exercise alone – (or even exercise combined with stretches and all the rest of the usual treatments) Exercise done too soon can be very aggravating to Tennis Elbow

UNLESS there’s no injury to the tendon yet.

Once again, I mean if there’s tendon pain because of weakness or tension or both – but there hasn’t been any actual damage to the tendon yet.

In that case, if you have pain, but no real injury, you may be able to turn it around with exercises and stretches.

If you’ve already been through all that nonsense with the pills, creams, ice, and braces, though – and you’ve tried like hell to stretch and exercise…

And you’re STILL not making any real progress – Then continuing to try and strengthen through exercises probably won’t help you.

It may even backfire and hurt you - As you may already know.

If you’d like to learn more about muscle weakness I have a video (free to subscribers) all about this important cause of Tennis Elbow –  (gets into quite a bit of technical detail)...
